Meet Sung-Chul Kim – Electrical Engineer

On this edition of “Ask an Expert”, we sat down with Sung-Chul Kim, Electrical Engineer at one of our clients sites, ABB Korea factory. Sung-Chul has been in the IFM field for more than 20 years with expertise in safety management and engineering.

좋은 아침입니다. 시간 내주셔서 감사합니다. 자기소개 좀 해주시겠어요?

Good morning Sung-Chul and thank you for your time. Could you please introduce yourself?

저는 ABB코리아 공장에서 현대 GBFMS에서 일하는 김성철이라고 합니다. 저는 전기안전관리자이고 엘리베이터안전, 물탱크안전, 화재안전 등을 담당하고 있습니다. 저는 IFM 분야에 약 20년 동안 종사해 왔습니다. 처음에는 생산시설을 주로 관리했지만 점차 건물관리와 환경관리로 역할이 확대되었습니다.

My name is Sung-chul Kim and I work for Hyundai GBFMS at the ABB Korea factory site. I am the electrical safety manager and I am in charge of elevator safety, water tank safety, and fire safety. I have been in the IFM field for about 20 years. At first, I mainly managed production facilities, but my role gradually expanded into building and environment management.

전기 엔지니어로써, 일상 업무 프로세스는 어떻습니까?

As Electrical Engineer, what is your usual daily work process?

​Sung-Chul Kim

보통 사무실과 공장의 HVAC와 같은 모든 시스템의 적절한 작동을 보장하기 위해 정규 근무 시간 전에 현장에 도착합니다. 또한 시설물이 문제없이 잘 운영되고 있는지 확인하고, 건물, 조경, 기타 시설물에 이상이 없는지 점검합니다. 다른 일상적인 업무에는 시설물정기검사, 문서 작성등과 관련 업무가 포함됩니다.

Usually, I arrive on site before regular working hours to ensure the proper operation of all systems such as HVAC for the offices and factories. Additionally, I also check whether the facilities are operating smoothly without any issues and check for any abnormalities in the buildings, landscaping, and other facilities. Other routine tasks include scheduled inspections, preparation of legal documents, and event-related functions.

엔지니어링 전문 IFM 분야에서 경력을 쌓으셨습니다. 엔지니어가 필요로 하는 핵심 역량은 무엇이라고 생각하십니까?

You developed your career in the IFM field specialized in engineering. What are the core capabilities do you think an engineer need?

엔지니어로 일하기 위해서는 법적 요건을 충족하는 데 필요한 자격증을 취득하고 필수 교육을 이수하며 엔지니어링 분야에서 원하는 진로를 신중하게 선택해야 합니다. 실제로 예기치 못한 기술적 고장에 대한 전문 기술을 인지할 뿐만 아니라 다양한 비상 상황에서 접촉하는 방법을 알아야합니다.

In order to work as an engineer, you must obtain the necessary certificates to meet the legal requirements, complete essential training, and carefully choose your preferred career path within the engineering field. In practice, it is useful to know how and who to contact in a variety of emergency situations as well as to be aware of specialized technology for any unforeseen technological failures.

엔지니어로써 당면한 과제는 무엇이며 이를 어떻게 극복합니까?

What are the challenges do you face as an Engineer and how do you overcome them?

​Sung-Chul Kim

우선, 업계 내에서 지속적으로 새로운 법적 요건이 시행되고 있습니다. 따라서, 그 자리에 필요한 자격과 역량의 양은 증가하고 있고 그 역할과 책임은 요즘 더 큰 기대를 필요로 합니다.

그러나 검사 기록을 정리하고 개선할수록 산업 내 안전성과 안정성이 향상되어 새로운 방법을 계속 배우고 연구할 수 있는 동기 부여가 됩니다. 배우는 것은 인생의 긴 과정이고 여러분이 일에 열정적일 때, 기술을 개발하는 것은 기쁨입니다.

First of all, there are constantly new legal requirements being implemented within the industry. Therefore, the amount of qualifications and competencies required for the position is increasing and the role and responsibility require higher expectations nowadays.

However, the more we organize and improve inspection records, the more improvement we see regarding safety and stability within the industry which gives me motivation to continue to learn and study new methods. Learning is a life long process and when you are passionate about your work, developing skills is a pleasure.

새로운 방법과 기술을 배우는 것을 즐긴다는 말이 듣기 좋네요. 직업에서 가장 좋아하는 부분은 무엇입니까?

That’s good to hear you enjoy learning new methods and skills. And what is the favorite part of your job?

시설 및 유지보수 시스템에 대한 세심한 검사를 통해 외부 요인으로부터의 간섭을 최소화하여 고객이 핵심 업무 활동에 집중하고 원활한 작업 환경을 보장할 수 있도록 합니다. 그래서 IFM을 좋아합니다. IFM 서비스를 전문가에게 맡기면 보다 효율적으로 운영되어 비용을 절감할 수 있습니다.

To be able to minimize interference from outside factors through careful inspection of facilities and maintenance systems so that my client can focus on his core business activities and ensure a smooth working environment. This is why I like IFM, if you entrust your IFM services to experts, they can operate more efficiently and therefore reduce costs.
